In the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, Bob Beamon leapt into the history books and the dictionary with a performance so remarkable it has lasted 54 years. On a cool October night, Bob Beamon broke the existing world record by almost two (2) feet with a leap of 29 ft 2 1/2 inches. Â The performance was so unexpected, it caused the long jump even to be delayed by over half an hour as officials figured out how to measure the distance. Â Bob Beamon had just out jumped the measurement equipment on the world's biggest stage for the event, setting a new World and Olympic Record.
Though Bob Beamon was a student at the University of Texas at El Paso at the time he set the world and Olympic record, he has never celebrated the historic performance in the state of Texas. Upon his return to campus, Bob Beamon (whose performance is ranked by ESPN as one of the Top 5 of all-time in the history of sports) was stripped of his athlete scholarship as a result of protesting social injustices of black Americans at the Olympic Games with Tommie Smith, Carlos Brooks, and others. Â
While the world record was broken in 1991, Bob Beamon's Olympic Record won't face its next challenge until 2024, guranteeing the record will last at least fifty-five (55) years, the longest period ever for a sports record!
